During the 1990s, many companies
bought packaged software solutions to take care of all their back office
operations. These solutions stored your data on mainframes and
minicomputers in a wide variety of formats, including DB2, SQL, Oracle,
and others.
Although such packaged software solutions
work well individually, they sometimes create "information
islands". These systems sometimes simply do not "talk" to
each other. As a result, when common data changes,
employees manually update the associated information in each system, a
process that quickly becomes cumbersome. Eventually, some of the data
across systems becomes inconsistent. When users notice the resulting
"double data entry", inconsistent data, and data isolation problems,
utilization of the system diminishes. Management reporting becomes suspect
and, at worse, inaccurate.
